Protecting and preserving the environment through sustainable manufacturing practices is the way Burrows Paper Corporation does business. Burrows’ long-standing focus on sustainability began in 1919 with the use of recycled fiber as part of its papermaking. Today, Burrows:
- Continues to make use of recycled materials
- Uses renewable resources
- Manufactures light weight specialty paper wraps and F-Lite® specialty packaging products with reduced basis weights that are recognized in the quick serve restaurant industry as helping to significantly reduce the amount of solid waste that goes to landfills
- Uses only water-based inks
- Produces certified compostable products to replace foam clamshells for food packaging
Reducing energy consumption is another important focus for Burrows Paper Corporation. Since 2003, Burrows has reduced the total energy consumption in its paper mills by more than 20% for every pound of paper produced. In 2009, Burrows was recognized by the US Department of Energy for successful energy savings at one of its paper mills.
At Burrows, a corporate goal is to produce as much renewable energy as is consumed from traditional energy resources. And through an affiliated partnership, Lyonsdale Associates, Burrows Paper Corporation is close to doing just that. Two hydroelectric plants generate power equal to (63%) of the amount needed to run all eight of Burrows’ manufacturing facilities. Wind and solar projects to generate additional renewable energy are being investigated.
Burrows will meet its goal and continue to make a difference.
